Isaiah 38:7
“This shall be the sign to you from Yahweh, that Yahweh will do this thing that he has spoken.”
What does Isaiah 38:7 mean?
When King Hezekiah was dying and desperately prayed for healing, God promised to extend his life, but Hezekiah understandably asked for proof. This verse is God's answer: he offers a concrete sign so that Hezekiah can actually trust and lean into the promise rather than just hear it as words. The sign itself (the sun's shadow moving backward) would be something undeniable, visible evidence that God meant what he said. There's something deeply compassionate in this. God didn't dismiss Hezekiah's need for reassurance as weakness or lack of faith. Instead, he met him where he was, offering something his eyes could see to anchor his heart to God's promise. For many of us facing difficult situations, this speaks to how God often works with our real human limitations—sometimes we need more than words to believe, and that's okay.
