What does Isaiah 33:9 mean?
When Isaiah paints this picture of a devastated landscape, he's describing what happens when God's judgment comes upon the land. Lebanon was famous for its magnificent cedar forests, Sharon for its fertile plains, and Bashan and Carmel for their lush vegetation, so naming these places stripped bare would have been shocking to his audience, like naming the most beautiful places you know and saying they've all turned to wasteland. The deeper message is that when people turn away from God, everything suffers, not just the people themselves. The land itself seems to grieve what's been lost.
