What does Isaiah 29:12 mean?

Isaiah is picturing a moment of spiritual blindness so complete that people can't understand God's message even when it's placed directly in their hands. The prophet is describing a stubborn refusal to listen, where those who should receive God's word are unable or unwilling to grasp it. It's a sobering image of how we can become so closed off that truth simply won't register, no matter how clearly it's offered. In context, Isaiah is warning Israel that their rejection of God's prophets will result in a kind of spiritual deafness and darkness, where understanding becomes impossible.
