What does Isaiah 29:10 mean?

God is describing a kind of spiritual numbness that has fallen over the people, especially their leaders and those who should be guiding them spiritually. When Isaiah talks about closed eyes and deep sleep, he's painting a picture of people who have become unable or unwilling to see truth, even when it's right in front of them. This came at a time when the nation was drifting from God's ways, and their spiritual leaders weren't calling them back. The "spirit of deep sleep" isn't a blessing but a consequence, a kind of hardness of heart that prevents people from waking up to what's really happening around them. It's a sobering reminder that when we persistently ignore God's voice, we can gradually lose the ability to hear it at all, almost as if we've drifted into a state where truth becomes harder to recognize.
