Isaiah 28:22
“Now therefore don’t be scoffers, lest your bonds be made strong; for I have heard a decree of destruction from the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, on the whole earth.”
What does Isaiah 28:22 mean?
Isaiah warns against mocking God's warnings with the seriousness it deserves. When people dismiss or ridicule what God is saying, they're not weakening His message, they're actually binding themselves more tightly to the consequences of ignoring it, like chains that grow stronger with each act of defiance. The prophet is speaking to people in a dangerous moment who have become cynical about their situation. Instead of taking seriously the threat of judgment coming to their land, they've adopted a posture of scorn and disbelief, almost as a way to cope with fear. But Isaiah tells them that this defensive mockery won't protect them, it will trap them more completely in the very disaster they're refusing to acknowledge. There's something tender underneath the warning, though. God doesn't want their destruction, and He's sent His message precisely because there's still time to turn around. The choice to listen or to scoff is real, and it matters.
