Isaiah 2:19
“Men shall go into the caves of the rocks, and into the holes of the earth, from before the terror of Yahweh, and from the glory of his majesty, when he arises to shake the earth mightily.”
What does Isaiah 2:19 mean?
Isaiah is describing a day when God's power becomes so visible and overwhelming that people will desperately seek hiding places, not out of hope but out of sheer fear. The image of running into caves and holes shows how overwhelming God's presence and judgment will feel to those who have turned away from him. This passage reminds us that God's majesty isn't something to be casually dismissed or ignored. While that might sound harsh, it's actually meant as a wake-up call: if we're running from God now through our choices and pride, we're headed toward a kind of terror that no cave can protect us from. The alternative Isaiah offers throughout this section is to turn toward God, to let his word guide us, and to find peace in relationship with him rather than in hiding. The point isn't to paralyze us with fear, but to help us understand that reconciliation with God matters deeply.
