What does Hosea 7:5 mean?
Hosea speaks here about a kingdom celebrating its ruler's birthday or coronation day, yet the occasion reveals spiritual emptiness rather than true joy. The officials are getting drunk and reckless, and the king himself is joining in with people who mock God and reject what's right, becoming complicit in their irreverence. The prophet uses this scene to show how a nation's leadership had abandoned its calling. When those in power distance themselves from integrity and surround themselves with people who scoff at faith, the whole society suffers. It's a portrait of moral decay dressed up as celebration, where what should be a meaningful moment of national identity instead exposes how far the people have drifted from God.
