Hosea 10:8
“The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, will be destroyed. The thorn and the thistle will come up on their altars. They will tell the mountains, “Cover us!” and the hills, “Fall on us!””
What does Hosea 10:8 mean?
When people turn away from God and build their own systems of worship instead, those systems eventually crumble, leaving only emptiness behind. The "high places" were altars where Israel had abandoned true worship for idolatry, and Hosea is saying these will fall into ruin and be reclaimed by weeds—a picture of total spiritual collapse. The final image is especially poignant: people crying out to the mountains to hide them, to make them disappear. This describes the despair that comes when we finally realize our choices have caught up with us. It's not meant to be hopeless, though. Rather, Hosea speaks this warning because God still longed for his people to turn back before reaching that point of desperation. For anyone in a hard season, this verse reminds us that our deepest regrets often stem from turning away from what we know is true, and that recognizing this early is a mercy.
