Hebrews 7:8
“Here people who die receive tithes, but there one receives tithes of whom it is testified that he lives.”
What does Hebrews 7:8 mean?
This passage contrasts two systems of giving. In the Jewish priesthood, regular priests collected tithes (a tenth of people's income), but since those priests eventually died, new priests had to continually replace them. Jesus, however, is described as a priest who lives forever, so his priesthood never needs replacement and continues receiving honor indefinitely. The writer is making the point that Jesus' eternal nature makes him a superior kind of priest, whose work doesn't fade away or require constant succession like human institutions do.
