What does Hebrews 7:7 mean?
This statement reflects a simple truth about how blessing works in relationships: the person with greater authority or standing offers blessing to those beneath them. In the passage, the writer is explaining why the priest Melchizedek was greater than Abraham, even though Abraham was the ancestor of all Jews, by pointing out that Melchizedek blessed Abraham. Since a greater person blesses a lesser one (not the other way around), that blessing itself proves Melchizedek held a higher position. The writer uses this principle to build an argument about Jesus's priesthood. Just as Melchizedek's blessing demonstrated his superiority to Abraham, Christ's role as our great high priest shows his authority and power to bring us blessing and salvation.
