Haggai 2:3
“‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Isn’t it in your eyes as nothing?”
What does Haggai 2:3 mean?
The prophet Haggai is speaking to the Jewish people who have recently returned from exile in Babylon and begun rebuilding their temple. Many of the older people remembered Solomon's magnificent original temple before it was destroyed, and they're grieving over how much smaller and humbler the new construction looks. Haggai's question isn't meant to shame them, but rather to name the disappointment they're already feeling so he can move them toward what matters most: that God's presence will fill this temple too, regardless of its earthly splendor. Sometimes acknowledging our letdowns honestly is the first step toward discovering that what we're building still has profound worth.
