What does Haggai 1:10 mean?
When we neglect what matters most to God, consequences ripple outward into our everyday lives. The prophet Haggai is telling the returning Israelites that their failure to rebuild God's temple—choosing instead to focus on their own comfortable homes—has brought scarcity and hardship to the land itself. It's not that God is punishing them arbitrarily, but that spiritual neglect creates a kind of spiritual emptiness that affects everything around us, including our provision and security. This speaks to something we still experience today: when we get our priorities backwards, we end up lacking what we actually need. The dew and the harvest aren't withheld as arbitrary punishment, but as a natural consequence of misaligned hearts. It's an invitation to look at what we're building our lives around and ask whether we're genuinely putting first things first.
