Genesis 9:2
“The fear of you and the dread of you will be on every animal of the earth, and on every bird of the sky. Everything that moves along the ground, and all the fish of the sea, are delivered into your hand.”
What does Genesis 9:2 mean?
After the flood, God is telling Noah that creation has been reset, and humans are now positioned as stewards with authority over the animals. Rather than describing how things *should* be ideally, this reflects the reality that animals will now instinctively avoid or fear humans, making it possible for people to survive and build new communities. It's also God's way of saying that the resources of the earth are entrusted to humanity's care and use. This doesn't mean we're free to exploit creation recklessly. The language of being "delivered into your hand" carries responsibility, suggesting we're accountable for how we treat what's been given to us. For many people today, this verse invites reflection on how we balance our legitimate need for food and resources with genuine stewardship of the natural world.
