What does Genesis 9:17 mean?
After the flood, God was reassuring Noah that the waters wouldn't destroy creation again. The "token" (or sign) being referred to is the rainbow, which appears just before this verse. God was giving Noah and his descendants something visible and beautiful to remember by, a recurring reminder that divine promise and protection remained. This matters because it shows that covenants in the Bible aren't abstract ideas kept only in heaven. God gives us signs we can see and experience in the physical world, something to return our thoughts to when we're afraid or doubting. For Noah starting over in a devastated world, that rainbow appearing after a storm wasn't just weather, it was God saying, "I remember you, and I'm keeping my word."
