What does Genesis 50:26 mean?
Joseph's life came to a peaceful close after more than a century of service to both Egypt and his own family. His mummification and careful placement in a coffin reflect the honor and respect he had earned during his long years as Egypt's chief administrator, and they also show how fully he had become part of Egyptian culture and society. Yet this ending holds deeper meaning: Joseph was embalmed and secured, but not buried in Egypt, foreshadowing what happens next in the biblical story. His body, preserved in this way, could be carried with his people when God would eventually lead them out of Egypt toward the promised land, keeping his connection to the covenant alive even in death.
