“Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.””
What does Genesis 50:25 mean?
Joseph is on his deathbed in Egypt, where he's lived as a foreigner for decades. He makes his descendants swear a solemn oath that when God eventually brings them back to their homeland (as he somehow knows will happen), they must take his bones with them for burial. It's a simple request, but it carries weight, the act of being buried in the ancestral land mattered deeply to ancient peoples as a way of belonging to their family's story even in death. Joseph's confidence that God will "visit" his people and lead them home shows his unshakeable faith, even as he dies in exile, trusting that God's promises will come true long after he's gone.
