Genesis 48:18
“Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father; for this is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.””
What does Genesis 48:18 mean?
Joseph is trying to correct his aging father Jacob, who has just placed his right hand on the younger son's head instead of the older one's. In that culture, the right hand signified the greater blessing and honor, so this matters deeply. Joseph is respectfully pushing back because he wants the tradition of birthright blessing to follow the proper order, with Manasseh (the firstborn) receiving the primary blessing. What makes this moment tender is that Jacob, acting under God's direction, is actually about to bless the younger son more abundantly anyway. Joseph's concern for doing things "the right way" bumps up against God's preference for blessing in unexpected patterns, a theme woven throughout Genesis. Sometimes our careful sense of how things should work gets gently overridden by grace.
