Genesis 48:17
“When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him. He held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.”
What does Genesis 48:17 mean?
Joseph's elderly father Jacob is blessing his grandsons, but he's deliberately placing his right hand (the position of honor and greater blessing) on the younger Ephraim rather than the firstborn Manasseh. Joseph notices this and tries to correct it, clearly troubled that the customary order isn't being followed. What Joseph doesn't yet understand is that his father is acting with spiritual insight, not forgetfulness or mistake, and is consciously reversing the expected pattern because God often works that way. This moment captures a son's assumption that he knows better than his aging parent, and his discomfort with blessing that doesn't follow the rules he understands.
