Genesis 48:12
“Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.”
What does Genesis 48:12 mean?
Joseph had just presented his two sons to his aging father Jacob for a blessing. After Jacob embraced and kissed them, Joseph removed the boys from Jacob's lap (where they had been sitting during the blessing ceremony) and then bowed deeply to the ground in respect and gratitude. This moment captures Joseph's profound respect for his father, even though Joseph himself had risen to tremendous power in Egypt. The gesture shows how deeply family bonds and honoring one's parents mattered in their culture, and it reveals Joseph's humble heart beneath all his authority and success.
