“Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were one hundred forty-seven years.”
What does Genesis 47:28 mean?
Jacob spent his final years in Egypt after his son Joseph brought him there during a terrible famine. Those seventeen years represent a season of relative peace and security, where Jacob got to see Joseph again and watch his grandchildren grow up, something he thought he'd lost forever when he believed Joseph had died. The mention of his full lifespan (147 years) acknowledges that even though Jacob lived a long life full of struggle and hardship, he was ultimately blessed to see his family restored and his legacy continue.
