Genesis 47:27
“Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they got themselves possessions therein, and were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly.”
What does Genesis 47:27 mean?
Jacob's family had just arrived in Egypt as refugees during a severe famine, unsure what their future would hold. This verse shows that instead of barely surviving, they flourished: they acquired property, their families grew, and they prospered in a foreign land that became a place of safety and abundance for them. There's something deeply human in this picture. The Egyptians gave them good land in Goshen, and the family thrived there for years. Sometimes what feels like displacement or exile becomes a season where God provides in surprising ways. This doesn't erase the difficulty of being strangers in a new place, but it reminds us that hardship and blessing can exist at the same time, and that periods we thought would be temporary can become seasons where we unexpectedly put down roots and experience God's care.
