Genesis 47:23
“Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh. Behold, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land.”
What does Genesis 47:23 mean?
During a severe famine, Joseph has systematized Egypt's survival by consolidating land and resources under Pharaoh's control, and now he's explaining the new arrangement to the people. He's telling them that while they've essentially become servants to the crown, they're being given seed to plant, which means they can work the land and provide for themselves and their families. This wasn't slavery in the harshest sense, but rather a feudal system where people retained the ability to farm and live, though they owed a portion of their harvest to Pharaoh.
