What does Genesis 44:29 mean?
Jacob is speaking here about Benjamin, his youngest son and the only remaining child of his beloved wife Rachel. He's already lost Joseph (or so he believes), and the thought of losing Benjamin too feels like it would literally kill him. When he says harm will bring his "gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol" (the place of the dead), he's expressing the deepest kind of grief, the kind that feels like it ends life itself.
