Genesis 43:7

They said, “The man asked directly concerning ourselves, and concerning our relatives, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ We just answered his questions. Is there any way we could know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down?’”

What does Genesis 43:7 mean?

The brothers are defending themselves to their father Jacob after being forced to reveal that they have another brother, Benjamin. When they first went to Egypt to buy grain, Joseph (whom they didn't recognize) interrogated them about their family, and they honestly answered his questions. Now Jacob is upset that they mentioned Benjamin at all, not realizing they had no choice in the matter. This moment captures the tension of their predicament: they answered truthfully when asked, yet that honesty has set in motion events they never could have anticipated. It's a reminder that sometimes we can do the right thing (being honest) and still find ourselves in difficult circumstances beyond our control.
