What does Genesis 43:6 mean?
Jacob (called Israel) is frustrated and afraid because his sons' mention of Benjamin to the Egyptian official (who is actually Joseph, though they don't know it) has put his youngest son in danger. Earlier, Joseph had demanded to see Benjamin as proof of their honesty, and now Jacob is feeling the weight of a terrible choice: let Benjamin go to Egypt and risk losing him, or refuse and risk his other sons' lives and his family's survival during famine. What makes this moment so human is that Jacob is lashing out at his sons in fear and desperation. He's not really angry about what they did (they were trying to save their lives), but he's terrified of what comes next. When we're afraid for the people we love most, we sometimes blame those closest to us, and that's what's happening here. Jacob's question reveals a father caught between impossible options, with no idea that his lost son Joseph is actually orchestrating events to bring his family back together.
