We have brought down other money in our hand to buy food. We don’t know who put our money in our sacks.”

What does Genesis 43:22 mean?

The brothers are explaining themselves to the Egyptian official (who is actually Joseph, though they don't recognize him yet). When they first returned home after buying grain, they discovered their payment money had mysteriously been returned in their sacks. Now they're back in Egypt with that money, plus additional funds, wanting to make things right and prove their honesty. This moment captures their genuine confusion and anxiety. They're not trying to deceive anyone, they're trying to do the honorable thing by returning what wasn't theirs to keep and bringing extra payment for more grain. There's something touching about their integrity here, even when they're scared and unsure what's happening. It's a reminder that sometimes doing the right thing means speaking up honestly, even when circumstances look suspicious or when we don't have all the answers.
