Genesis 43:21
“When we came to the lodging place, we opened our sacks, and behold, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. We have brought it back in our hand.”
What does Genesis 43:21 mean?
When Jacob's sons discovered that the money they'd used to buy grain had mysteriously been returned inside their sacks, they were understandably alarmed. To them, it looked like they'd been accused of theft, and they feared the Egyptian official (Joseph, though they didn't recognize him) would think they'd stolen it. Now, as they're being brought back to face him again, they're explaining their honesty and their confusion, making it clear they're returning the money they never intended to keep. This moment captures how fear and misunderstanding can make even innocent people feel guilty. The brothers don't yet know that Joseph, whom they'd sold into slavery years earlier, was secretly testing them and showing them mercy. What feels like a trap to them is actually an expression of grace. Their panic reminds us that sometimes when we're in hard circumstances, we may struggle to see the good intentions behind what confuses or frightens us.
