Genesis 42:4
“But Jacob didn’t send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with his brothers; for he said, “Lest perhaps harm happen to him.””
What does Genesis 42:4 mean?
Jacob had already lost Joseph to what he believed was death, and the grief never left him. When famine forced his sons to travel to Egypt to buy food, he refused to let Benjamin go with them, even though Benjamin was Joseph's full brother and the only other son from Joseph's beloved mother Rachel. Jacob couldn't bear the thought of losing another son, so he held Benjamin back out of protective love. This moment captures something painfully human: how our deepest wounds can make us overprotective, sometimes to our own detriment. Jacob's fear, though understandable, actually put his whole family at risk by keeping back the one person the Egyptian official (Joseph, though Jacob didn't know it) most wanted to see. Sometimes our attempts to prevent hurt end up creating the very problems we're trying to avoid.
