Genesis 42:15
“By this you shall be tested. By the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go out from here, unless your youngest brother comes here.”
What does Genesis 42:15 mean?
Joseph has just accused his brothers of being spies, and now he's laying down a test to prove they're telling the truth about having a younger brother back home. He's essentially saying, "I won't let you leave Egypt unless one of you goes back and brings Benjamin here to verify your story." This moment is loaded with irony: Joseph knows exactly who they are, but they don't recognize him. By insisting on seeing Benjamin, Joseph is creating a situation that will force his brothers to either abandon their youngest brother (as they abandoned Joseph years ago) or bring him into danger. What looks like a simple security check is actually Joseph setting up a test of their character, to see if they've changed since selling him into slavery. It's a reminder that sometimes the hardest tests in life aren't random, but rather situations that reveal what we truly value and who we've become.
