What does Genesis 42:14 mean?
Joseph is repeating what he's already said to his brothers, who've come to Egypt to buy food during a famine. They don't recognize him as their younger brother whom they once sold into slavery, but he recognizes them. His accusation that they're spies seems harsh at first, but it's actually a way of testing them, keeping them off balance while he watches how they react and what they reveal about themselves and their family back home. In this moment, he's insisting he wasn't confused or speaking carelessly before, which creates pressure that will eventually lead his brothers toward honesty about their past.
