What does Genesis 4:24 mean?
Lamech is boasting here about his own power to take revenge, building on a curse God placed on Cain generations earlier. When Cain killed his brother Abel, God marked him so no one would harm him, yet also declared that anyone who killed Cain would face sevenfold punishment. Lamech is essentially saying he's even more fearsome: if someone harms him, he'll take revenge not seven times but seventy-seven times over. This moment shows how quickly human sinfulness spirals. What began as God's justice (protecting the guilty-but-marked Cain) becomes twisted into human pride and escalating violence.
