Genesis 39:20
“Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were bound, and he was there in custody.”
What does Genesis 39:20 mean?
Joseph finds himself in prison not because of anything he actually did wrong, but because he refused to compromise his integrity. His master's wife falsely accused him of assault after Joseph rejected her advances, and rather than let the truth come out (which would have shamed his master's household), Joseph was imprisoned. This verse marks the low point of a man who had done everything right and still ended up in chains, abandoned and forgotten. Yet what makes this moment significant for Joseph's story is that God doesn't abandon him either, even in the darkness of a prison cell. Sometimes faithfulness doesn't protect us from hardship, but it positions us to experience God's presence in ways we might not otherwise know.
