“Joseph was brought down to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites that had brought him down there.”
What does Genesis 39:1 mean?
Joseph's story takes a sharp turn here, moving from the pit where his brothers left him to the household of a powerful Egyptian official. Being sold into slavery would have felt like complete abandonment, yet the narrative quietly introduces us to Potiphar, a man of significant authority in Pharaoh's court. What matters most in this moment isn't Joseph's terrible circumstances, but that he hasn't been lost or forgotten in God's larger story, even though everything in his life suggests otherwise. Sometimes our worst chapters contain the seeds of unexpected faithfulness and growth, even when we can't see it yet.
