Genesis 35:3
“Let us arise, and go up to Bethel. I will make there an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me on the way which I went.””
What does Genesis 35:3 mean?
Jacob is calling his household to journey to Bethel, a place significant in his spiritual history, to build an altar and honor God. He's remembering a specific time when he was in deep trouble and felt God's presence and help, and now he wants to publicly acknowledge that faithfulness with worship. There's something beautiful about this moment: Jacob isn't building the altar because everything is easy or because he's achieved great success, but specifically because God was faithful during his distress. He's saying that the hardship itself became a doorway to experiencing God's closeness and protection.
