What does Genesis 35:14 mean?
Jacob is marking a sacred moment. He's just encountered God at Bethel again, receiving reassurance and blessing during a difficult season of his life, and he wants to create a physical memorial of that encounter. Setting up a stone pillar was how ancient people commemorated important spiritual experiences, turning an invisible meeting into something tangible they could return to. The drink offering and oil weren't about impressing God but about dedicating the moment to him, the way we might light a candle or write something down when we've experienced God's presence. It's a very human response to the divine: when something transforms us, we need to do something, acknowledge it somehow, make it real and remembered. That impulse to honor and mark what God has done is something many of us recognize, whether we build altars of stone or simply pause to give thanks.
