Genesis 35:1
“God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and live there. Make there an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.””
What does Genesis 35:1 mean?
God is calling Jacob back to the place where he first met him, reminding Jacob of a pivotal moment from years earlier when Jacob was running for his life. Bethel (which means "house of God") was where Jacob had encountered God in a dream and made his first promises to follow him. By telling Jacob to return there and build an altar, God is inviting him to remember his original commitment and to deepen his relationship with God in a more intentional way.
