What does Genesis 34:22 mean?
After Shechem violates Dinah, her brothers propose a covenant of intermarriage and unity, but they secretly add a condition: all the men of Shechem's city must be circumcised. The men of the city agree, thinking this will seal a beneficial alliance and allow them to share in Abraham's family wealth and land. What makes this moment tragic is that the brothers are using a sacred religious practice as a weapon. Circumcision was meant to be a sign of covenant with God, something done in faith and devotion. Instead, it becomes a trap, and the circumcised men will be defenseless when Dinah's brothers exact violent revenge just three days later, when they're most vulnerable from the procedure. This passage shows how easily we can twist what's holy into something false when anger and a desire for revenge take hold. The brothers cloak violence in the language of peace and unity, which is why this story sits uncomfortably in Scripture: it's meant to show us what happens when families decide to handle injustice through deception rather than bringing their pain and rage to God.
