Genesis 34:21
““These men are peaceful with us. Therefore let them live in the land and trade in it. For behold, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.”
What does Genesis 34:21 mean?
This verse shows Hamor and his son Shechem trying to convince the men of their city to accept a peace treaty with Jacob's family after a serious crime has been committed. They're arguing practically: there's plenty of land for everyone, trade benefits both groups, and intermarriage will bind the communities together. What sounds like a reasonable business proposal on the surface actually masks something darker, since it comes after Shechem has violated Jacob's daughter Dinah. The offer of peace and partnership is genuine in some ways, but it doesn't address the harm that was done.
