Genesis 32:4
“He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.”
What does Genesis 32:4 mean?
Jacob is sending messengers ahead to his estranged brother Esau, trying to pave the way for a reunion after decades of separation. He's being deliberately humble and respectful here, calling himself Esau's "servant" and Esau his "lord," which shows how anxious he is about their encounter. By mentioning his long exile with Laban, Jacob is essentially saying, "I've been away a long time, and I'm ready to come home"—implying both that he's suffered and that he wants to make peace. It's a nervous, careful first step from someone who once deceived his brother and is now hoping to be forgiven.
