What does Genesis 32:14 mean?
Jacob is making a massive gift to his brother Esau, whom he wronged years earlier and is now nervously approaching. This verse lists part of that peace offering, which totals hundreds of animals across multiple categories. The specificity of the numbers shows how seriously Jacob took the reconciliation, and how much he had to give after years of prosperity in exile. Sometimes when we've hurt someone, a sincere apology isn't enough, and we're called to show our regret through genuine sacrifice and generosity.
