What does Genesis 30:9 mean?
Leah was struggling with the pain of being less loved than her sister Rachel, Jacob's preferred wife. After having several children herself, Leah made a cultural move available to women of her time: she gave her servant Zilpah to Jacob so that children born through this arrangement would legally belong to Leah and boost her status in the household. This passage shows how deeply Leah's insecurity ran, and how people in difficult situations sometimes try to solve heartache through methods that ultimately can't touch the real wound. No amount of children or clever arrangements could change Jacob's heart or make Leah feel truly cherished, which is what she actually longed for.
