Genesis 30:10
“Zilpah, Leah’s servant, bore Jacob a son.”
What does Genesis 30:10 mean?
Jacob had married Leah, but their relationship was strained because he loved Rachel more. In the culture of that time, when a wife couldn't have children, she would sometimes give her servant to her husband so that children born to the servant would legally belong to the wife. Leah did this with Zilpah, her servant, as a way to build her family and secure her place in Jacob's household. This son, Gad, represented Leah's attempt to find worth and stability through bearing children, even if not directly, showing how deeply she longed to be valued by her husband.
