What does Genesis 30:28 mean?
Laban is asking Jacob to name his own price for staying and working longer with the flocks. After fourteen years of labor (seven for each of his wives, Rachel and Leah), Jacob has become invaluable to Laban's operation, and Laban doesn't want to lose him. This moment reveals how much Jacob's hard work and skill have made him indispensable, and it sets the stage for Jacob to negotiate for his own wealth and independence. There's something hopeful here: when we prove ourselves faithful in what we're given, we sometimes gain the opportunity to advocate for ourselves and build something of our own.
