What does Genesis 28:3 mean?

Isaac is blessing his son Jacob before he leaves home, asking God to make him prosperous and give him countless descendants. The word "fruitful" here means flourishing in life, and "multiply" refers to having many children, which in that culture represented both blessing and security for the future. Isaac is essentially praying that Jacob's life will overflow with God's favor, that he'll build a large family and community, and that his descendants will become influential peoples. It's a beautiful picture of a father entrusting his son to God's care as he steps into an uncertain future.
