Genesis 28:13
“Behold, Yahweh stood above it, and said, “I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. The land whereon you lie, to you will I give it, and to your offspring.”
What does Genesis 28:13 mean?
Jacob has just fled his home in fear, sleeping outdoors with only a stone for a pillow, and in a dream he sees a stairway connecting earth to heaven. In this moment of vulnerability and displacement, God appears and identifies himself not as a distant deity but as the God of Jacob's own family, the one his grandfather Abraham and father Isaac already knew. God then promises Jacob the very land beneath him, the place where he's lying alone and afraid, reassuring him that this inheritance will extend to his descendants as well.
