“Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.””
What does Genesis 27:21 mean?
Isaac, now very old and nearly blind, is testing whether the person before him is truly his eldest son Esau. Jacob has come to his father's bedside dressed in Esau's clothes and wearing goatskin to feel hairy like his brother, all part of a deception scheme his mother Rebekah orchestrated. In this moment, Isaac relies on touch (the only sense he can trust now) to verify his son's identity, unaware that he's about to be tricked into giving his most precious blessing to the wrong child. This scene shows how vulnerability and sensory limitation can make us susceptible to being misled, even by those closest to us.
