“that you will do us no harm, as we have not touched you, and as we have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace.’ You are now the blessed of Yahweh.””
What does Genesis 26:29 mean?
Abimelech, the king of the Philistines, is speaking to Isaac after a period of tension between them over water rights and wells. He's proposing a peace treaty, reminding Isaac that they've treated him fairly and even protected him, so he's asking for the same in return. The final phrase—"You are now the blessed of Yahweh"—shows that Abimelech recognizes Isaac carries God's favor, even though Abimelech himself doesn't worship Isaac's God. There's something hopeful here about two people from different backgrounds choosing to make peace rather than continue conflict. Abimelech is essentially saying, "I see that God is with you, so let's not fight."
