What does Genesis 26:27 mean?
Isaac is confronting Abimelech and his officials who have just arrived at his home after years of tension between them. Earlier, Abimelech had forced Isaac to leave the region out of fear that Isaac's presence was making him too powerful, and now these same people are showing up asking to make a peace treaty. Isaac's question cuts right to the heart of the awkwardness: if you despised me enough to exile me, why are you here now? It's the kind of thing someone says when they're hurt and confused, wanting to understand what's really going on beneath the surface. The vulnerability in his words reflects how rejection leaves a mark, even when circumstances later change.
