Genesis 25:20
“Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Paddan Aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian, to be his wife.”
What does Genesis 25:20 mean?
Isaac was in his forties when he married Rebekah, making him significantly older than she was (she was likely a young teenager, which was customary for that time and culture). The verse carefully traces Rebekah's family line through her father Bethuel and her brother Laban, which matters because these relatives will play important roles later in the story. What's worth noticing is that despite Isaac's wealth and status, he needed a wife from his own people and homeland values, so his servant had traveled far to find her. This marriage, arranged through careful negotiation and guided by what Isaac's family saw as God's direction, became foundational to the covenant promises God made to Abraham passing through to the next generation.
