“The servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter.”
What does Genesis 24:9 mean?
This unusual gesture was how people sealed the most serious promises in Abraham's time. By placing his hand under Abraham's thigh (near the source of his family line), the servant was making a sacred oath before God, essentially saying, "May my own descendants be cursed if I break this promise." It was Abraham's way of ensuring this servant would truly commit to finding the right wife for Isaac, not just go through the motions. The physical act made the vow feel weighty and real in a way that words alone might not have. What matters for us today is the principle: the servant understood that some commitments demand our whole heart and complete honesty.
